The Annexation of Ballard
Godric Avery was born into a life of privilege. The seventh son of Brion and Martha Avery, he is a member of the royal house of the small city-state Ballard. Ballard, a minuscule island-nation, is located at the lucrative junction of two sea-trade routes. As a result, the island and its inhabitants enjoyed a great deal of autonomy and wealth, much of which trickled up to the royal family.

At least until the island nation, which had no standing army, was forcefully annexed by the Naltronian Empire.

When Naltronian ships unexpectedly appeared in the harbor of Ballard's capital city, Edgewater, a 22-year-ld Avery attempted to rally a small resistance force to his side. While Godric collected a token defense force, his father sailed out into the harbor to negotiate with the Naltronians on their flagship. Upon boarding the Naltronian ship however, Brion was taken prisoner. It was the last time Godric would see his father for many years.

The Naltronians landed their troops and quickly captured the royal family with the exception of Godric, who remained hidden in the countryside. Over the next few weeks, the young man watched as the Naltronians, undermining his family's power, brokered trade deals with the island's powerful shipping guilds. With the guilds in their pocket, the Naltronians cemented their hold on the island by establishing a garrison and appointing a governor over the island. Godric's mother and two sisters were publicly humiliated in the Edgewater Harbor Square, and sent to a nearby convent to live out their days.

Godric, enraged but powerless, left on a skiff with a few of his close friends -- young sons and daughters of the city's elite.

Enacting Revenge
Godric, isolated, still believed his father and family were being held as political prisoners on Ballard. To rescue them and free the island from Naltronian control, the ordinarily carefree, irresponsible and overly-idealistic Godric decided to build a fleet. To do so, he and his close cadre of friends used their royal status (and considerable inheritances, smuggled off the island) to purchase an old, decommissioned Naltronian warship. A natural sailor since he was born, Godric decided to captain the ship, which he christened "The Edgewater." Hiring a crew proved easy; the group tracked down other ostracized and newly-nationless Ballardians. Their recruits included a young sorceress, Calenda, who quickly caught the eye of Godric, for more than a few reasons.

Cause and Effect
The almost overwhelming task of freeing the island Ballard soon got the better of an inexperienced and vain Godric. Over the next few months, Godric and his crew did little to remedy the situation on the occupied island. Instead, they embarked on a pleasure cruise, traveling to exotic locals and frivolously spending what little inheritance money they had left.

While sailing near the Shin Malas archipelago, Avery, foolishly flying Ballardian colors, was run down and boarded by a Naltronian corvette. After securing the ship, the Naltronians turned back toward their homeland, intent on bringing the renegade Avery to justice.

The next three days and nights were hell for Avery and his crew, who were held abroad their own ship and tortured and interrogated. The Naltronians, aware that Avery was the missing crown prince of Ballard, were particularly ruthless with the would-be monarch. In a mockery of the Ballardian flag, the seared three lines resembling waves into Avery's back.

But the Naltronian sailors --and Avery-- didn't realize the extent of Calenda's powers. One of the few to escape torture, Calenda waited until the Shin Malas coastline fell out of sight. At night, she called a firestorm down on the Naltronian ship, then used a cantrip to free her and several of her companions, including Garrick Reynolds, a swordsman. Together, they retook the Edgewater.

The experience transformed Godric.

Another Man
Godric, hardened by the torture he and his crew endured, ordered the ship back to Shin Malas. After searching the coast, and and his crew fell upon a small Naltronian merchant vessel that was just leaving port. There, in full view of the village, he and his crew massacred the civilian Naltronian crew onboard. Then, just before twilight, Calenda torched the ship with a fireball. All night, a mile from shore, the ship burned. It was a grim precursor of what was to come.

In the next year, the crew of the Edgewater became corsairs in every sense of the word. Generous and friendly to ships from other nations, they made up for it with notorious brutality when they found a Naltronian ship. No two raids conducted by Avery followed the same pattern, although Godric frequently used the talents of his resident sorceress to turn the tide of battle.

In no time at all, Naltronian reward posters were tacked up in ports on the southern coast of Naltrim. Suddenly infamous, Avery's crew swelled with Ballardian outcasts and freelancers. A victorious battle with a Naltronian corvette allowed Avery to equip his ship with stolen ballistas and iron plating.

A month later, Avery captured another intact corvette, but spared the captain and crew. He gave them sufficient water and sent them to mainland Naltronia with a message: "I will not rest until Ballard is free."

He then re-christened the captured ship and gave it to Garrick to captain. The two stayed together a short time, then Garrick sailed east to strike out for new territory, promising to remain in contact with Godric.

Godric Avery, the self-proclaimed Lord Edgewater, frequents the seas on the southwest coast of Naltrim. Despite acquiring another ship, Godric is more a nuisance to the massive Naltronia Empire than a true threat.

Still, the heir to the throne of Ballard is determined to wage his one-man war against the Naltronians as long as he is free. Single-minded in his brutality against his foe, he is equally honorable and friendly to any ship that doesn't fly the Naltronian flag.

It is Godric's lifelong goal to see his nation free from Naltronian dominion, and he will go to any length to see it happen.

Appearance
Godric is a big man, broad-chested, with braided black hair and blue eyes. The son of nobility, he loves the wearing the regalia and trappings of a sea captain.

Despite his fondness for pomp and circumstance, Avery is a capable captain and navigator -- traits that run in the blood of native Ballardians. He is also an extremely strong swimmer.

Quick to laugh, Godric is likewise quick to anger. He is often egotistical and impulsive, which can work to his disadvantage in combat and cloud his judgment. But that same impulsiveness often catches his enemies off-guard.

Godric is frequently accompanied by Calenda, and he fondly refers to her as his "secret weapon."

After more than a decade at sea together, the two have struck up a relationship.

In no time at all, Naltronia reward posters were tacked up in ports on the southern coast of Naltrim. Eventually, their crew swelled with Ballardian outcasts and freelancers. A victorious battle with a Naltronian corvette allowed Avery to equip his ship with stolen ballistas and iron plating.

A month later, Avery captured another intact corvette, but spared the captain and crew. He gave them sufficient water and sent them to mainland Naltronia with a message: Free Ballard.

He then re-christened the captured ship and gave it to Garrick to captain. The two stayed together a short time, then Garrick sailed east to strike out for new territory, promising to remain in contact with Godric.

Godric Avery, the self-proclaimed Lord Edgewater, still frequents the seas on the southwest coast of Naltrim. Despite capturing a second ship, Godric is more a nuisance to the massive Naltronia Empire than a true threat.

Still, the heir to the throne of Ballard is determined to wage his one-man war against the Naltronians as long as he is free. Single-minded in his brutality against his foe, he is equally honorable and friendly to any ship that doesn't fly the Naltronian flag.

After several years at sea together, the two have struck up a relationship.

He them re-christened the captured ship and gave it to Garrick to captain.

Still, the heir to the throne of Ballard is determined to wage his one-man against the Naltronians as long as he is free. Single-minded in his brutality against his foe, he is equally honorable and friendly to any ship that doesn't fly the Naltronian flag.

Appearance
Godric is a big man, broad-chested, with braided black hair and blue eyes. The son of nobility, he enjoys dressing the part, and looking and playing the part of a sea captain.

After several years at sea together, the two have struck up a relationship.

Together, they retook the ship.

The experience transformed Godric.

Godric and Calenda
The almost overwhelming task of freeing the island Ballard soon got the better of an inexperienced Godric. Over the next few months, Godric and his crew did little to remedy the situation on the occupied island. Instead, they embarked on a wild pleasure cruise, traveling to exotic locals and frivolously spending what little inheritance money they had left.

Youth
Calemis V'anuryl was born to Marien and Alaric V’anuryl. He had one sister, Linnea, 21 years his senior. His parents were Druids, and so he learned to adhere to the Druidic Codes at an early age.

When he was young he displayed some talent, and unquestioningly obeyed the Druidic dogma laid before him. For Calemis there was no distinction between law and action. Impressed by his ability and strict observance of the Conclave code, Calemis’ clan elders took him under their wing when he was still a young man. Assuming the authority of those set over him, Calemis became intolerant and inflexible, even at such an early age, and he regarded those below his talent level with contempt.

The Blighters
50 years after Calemis was born, the Druid Conclave was forced to put down a rebellion—a rogue group of Druidic blighters that had separated from the Conclave after a philosophical debate concerning the nature of creation.

The blighters believed in an indivisible cycle of destruction and creation. The leader of this movement, Simon S’olermyn, thought that, by escalating the cycle of destruction, he and his followers could cause a great conflagration in the world, which would in turn lead to the advent of paradise on earth. He based his reasoning on a number of natural principles, and recorded his thoughts in a philosophical dissertation entitled Paradise Regained. What follows is an essential excerpt from his book:

“It is known that, in the Wilderness, death sustains life. For example, the ashes of a forest fire provide more fertile soil for future growth. In this way natural death is essential to natural rebirth. Our task, then, is to facilitate natural death—we must sweep across this land like a wildfire. We will be a cleansing furnace, and in our wake a higher level of growth and existence will rise.”

S’olermyn was declared a heretic by the Conclave. He was captured in a raid and quickly executed. However, S’olermyn proved to be more influential in death, rather than life. His martyrdom unified the blighter movement, and to begin their Armageddon, they desiccated nearly a quarter of the Druidic territory—leaving no plant or animal alive in their wake. The battle that ensued between the Conclave and the blighters was of epic proportions—but in the end the blighters were isolated and overwhelmed.

Calemis, though enraged by the Blighter’s philosophy, was considered too young to fight, and was involved in no real violence during the short war.

After Effects
After the rebellion, however, discontent shook the foundations of the Druidic Conclave. The Druid Hierarch, Thawne Elewyvne, was frightened and outraged by the Blighters philosophy. Gradually his fear grew into a desperate paranoia, and he created an organization of Sentinals, who were tasked with tracking out and killing any Blighters or Necromancers that might’ve escaped death in the war. The Sentinals instituted a massive internal witch hunt. For decades following the war, thousands of Druids were accused, tortured, and executed by the organization. Elewyvne was supportive of the organization’s actions:

“They (the Blighters) wanted purging fire, and so we will give it to them. Eliminate them where ever they can be found!”

The Sentinals
Calemis, at the age of 85, was impressed by the Sentinal’s mission, and joined the militaristic organization. Eventually, Calemis’ ambition propelled him to the top of the organization’s ranks, and he was considered the Sentinal’s poster-child, the epitomy of loyalty to the Conclave. He was personally responsible for the deaths of dozens of Druids.

Five years after Calemis joined the Sentinals, several members of the organization itself were executed for heresy. This led to widespread paranoia within Sentinal’s members, and a great number of its associates were tested for loyalty. For Calemis, this development was tragic. Calemis’ on-and-off-again girlfriend, Rosynna R’allion, was falsely accused of heresy by Kellas Cambrion, Calemis’ immediate superior and rival in the Sentinals. Calemis was ordered to lead the trial and investigation into Rosynna’s actions. He refused.

Cambrion was outraged by Calemis’ insubordination, and accused Calemis of being an unrepentant Necromancer. Calemis and Rosynna were tried by Thawne Elewyvne himself, and both were found guilty.

Calemis was shaken by this development. The system that he had fervently believed in had betrayed him. Calemis and Rosynna would’ve been executed that night, but a small group of blighters broke into the trial proceedings. An intense magical firefight ensued, and a number of Druids, including Thawne Elewvyne were killed. The blighters freed Rosynna and Calemis, and escaped to the coast, where they caught a ship and fled the continent.
The Druids set up a fierce pursuit, and tracked Calemis, Rosynna, and the Blighters to an island, where they systematically slaughtered the heretics.

Towards the tail end of the fight, Kellas Cambrion ambushed and killed Rosynna. Calemis pursued Cambrion, and was critically injuredin the subsequent duel. He managed to drag himself to the ruins of the blighters’ ship. The ship, loosed from its moorings, floated out to sea, and Calemis, sorely wounded, lapsed into a coma.

Later Life
He awoke some days later, on the eastern shore of Harim'Ra, an archipelago of islands far out in the sea. Distressed by his narrow escape, and the death of Rosynna, he decided to remain on the island. He quickly met up with a group of interesting and sometimes outrageous island residents, including the necromancer Nezra and a psychic named Aeyluna.

Together, over a year, he shared a number of adventures and more than a few conflicts with his erstwhile companions. Tragically, Calemis died after his group was attacked by a jungle elemental.

Legacy
Calemis left a mark on his island home. A skilled manipulator of stone and wood, he used Druidic Magic to craft a temple high in the mountains on the northwest coast of Halim'Ra. The temple included a well, a grove of fruit trees, and an extensive tunnel network, where Calemis kept some of his more valuable (and dangerous) souvenirs from his quests. The temple is all but inaccessible, except from the air.

Calemis also crafted a pair of ships, including the first steam-powered vessel, which was designed to take a party to the Sarattan South Pole. Both ships appear to be crafted out of a single piece of wood, and are well-armed and hardy. After Calemis' death, both vessels went untended, and may still be moored in a hidden harbor on the northwest side of the island.

Together, over a year, he shared a number of adventures and more than a few conflicts with his erstwhile companions. Tragically, Calemis died after his group was attacked by a jungle elemental.

Towards the tail end of the fight, Cellas Cambrion, Calemis’ sworn enemy, ambushed and killed Rosynna. Calemis foolishly pursued Cambrion, and was critically injured. He managed to drag himself to the ruins of the blighters’ ship. The ship, loosed from its moorings, floated out to sea, and Calemis, sorely wounded, lapsed into a coma.

Later Life
He awoke some days later, on the eastern shore of Halim'Ra, an archipelago of islands far out in the sea.

The leader of this movement, Simon S’olermyn, believed that, by escalating the cycle of destruction, he and his followers could cause a great conflagration in the world, which would in turn lead to the advent of paradise on earth.

Calemis also crafted a pairof ships, including the first steam-powered vessel, which was designed to take a party to the Sarattan South Pole. Both ships appear to be crafted out of a single piece of wood, and are well-armed and hardy. After Calemis' death, both vessels went untended, and may still be moored in a hidden harbor on the northwest side of the island.
